A recent conversation with a prospective customer (PC)

PC: We need help building our brand. Our brand really needs developing.

Me: How is your business today? How many new clients did you pick-up last month?

PC: None.

Me: How about the last three months?

PC: One.

Me: Are you making enough money to break-even?

PC: Not right now. We’ve done much better in the past. Our brand really needs help.

Me: How about we increase your business first and make more money? We can work on your brand later.

I don’t want to start a religious war over branding. But if you’re broke and you’re worrying about your brand…you’re focused on the wrong thing. Branding and immediate revenue have nothing in common and shouldn’t share the same conversation.
